Though I am slowly improving just about two and a half months after my accident, I am in no way able to function in the way that I did before the accident. [Lesson 5: Healing usually a lot longer then we want.] I tire very quickly. I get moody more than I used to. Some times it is still difficult to concentrate. I still get anxiety attacks, though they are far less frequent. I know this to be absolutely true. Often people mistakenly blame God when life turns against them. Satan rejoices when God is blamed for what Satan did in the first place. [Lesson 4: Don’t blame God for Satan’s misdeeds.]

After my accident, my mind and thoughts went to a very dark place. I felt that enemies were all about me. I saw myself solely as being a victim. Praise the Lord for the wisdom of my son Joseph. As he was driving me to an appointment, Joseph challenged me. He said the negative things I was thinking and saying were from the Devil. My son told me to get to Mass (I am a Catholic after all), and go to confession. Relate to the priest how via my accident I have been under attack, mentally, physically and even spiritually.

My son was right. I called the insurance company and booked an appointment with my Doctor as soon as I could. By the next afternoon waves of panic attacks hit me for the first time. Though I have suffered from depression off and on since my childhood, horrific bouts of depression attacked. Depression mixed with anxiety is a nasty thing. Luckily within a few days I saw my Doctor. He did what he could sending me for various tests, told me to severely limit all activities, and then he referred me to see my chiropractor. [Lesson 3: Refer. My Doctor is a wise man. He asked me if I had a chiropractor, when I told him that I did he referred me on. The lesson learned is simple, no therapist can heal all aspects of a suffering person. It takes a team of healers to make healing efficacious.]

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://breathinglifeintoministry.blogspot.com/2011/09/oh-where-oh-where-has-my-little-dog_17.html' title='Oh where oh where has my little dog brain gone? The reason is simple. At 6:30 AM on June 29th I was in a severe car accident. The car I was driving was stopped at a red light, and a lady who for but a moment was preoccupied, did not see me until it was far too late. WHAM!! [Lesson 1: While handling a motor vehicle, pay attention and try not to be distracted.]

My car, a big old 1992 Crown Victoria was sent way out into the intersection. The lady’s car received rather major front end damage. The lady herself was uninjured. My old Crown Vic, received minimal damage, but my head hit the head rest at about 60 kph, thus inflicting a sever concussion with moderate spine and neck damage.

Thus began a confusing summer, that luckily I don’t remember great parts of.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://breathinglifeintoministry.blogspot.com/2011/09/oh-where-oh-where-has-my-little-dog.html' title='Oh where oh where has my little dog brain gone? Sadly, depending on where you live, Christianity, and even being a Christian is rapidly becoming ever increasingly unpopular, if not dangerous. In many western societies there tends to be a greater acceptance of other religious views, or the views of secularism, or atheism than there is for Christianity. Now if Christianity is either banned or not accepted in the work force how is the Integrated Christian Person to Proclaim the Gospel with his/her every though, word or action?

St. Francis of Assisi said “At all times and in all places proclaim the Gospel, only if necessary use words.”

St. Francis reminds us that we will be known by what we do and how we love, even those who persecute us.

The Integrated Christian Person - Part 8 - Proclaiming the Gospel within Ministry

We have proposed in previous posts that “The Integrated Christian Person is one who is in complete harmony of thought, word and action. In doing this he/she does justice, loves kindness, and to walks humbly with God. The Integrated Christian Person does does all these things within the knowledge that he/she is following the Biblical Dictate of the Great Commissioning. “

The Great Commissioning calls the Integrated Christian Person to proclaim the Good News of the Gospel to all of Creation. Now this challenge may seem simple enough, but sometimes ulterior motives sneak in and distract the person in formal ministry from this task. These ulterior motives can appear as the distractions of the busyness of a life in ministry. They can emerge as desires by the person in ministry to be accepted and thus popular with his/her congregation. Thus, the minister/pastor etc. will proclaim only what the congregation wants to hear, rather than what the congregation truly needs to hear. An effective inner corrective measure that the person in ministry needs to focus on is that it is “Jesus’ Church” these are “Jesus’ People” not his/hers. His or her job is to proclaim the Good News of Jesus, not the Good News according to his of her own self.

The Integrated Christian Person - Part 7 - Being Commissioned

The Integrated Christian Person is one who is in complete harmony of thought, word and action. Father Lucian taught me many things, but one of his messages that I have most often shared has been his teaching on true humility.

Humility comes from the Latin word Humus (Earth). Humility is to be of the earth, or to be as we truly are. Thus, let us in humility serve the Lord Jesus utilizing our strengths (talents) and admitting at the same time our weaknesses.

The Integrated Christian Person - Part 5 - To love kindness

How do we love kindness in our thoughts, words and actions?

First, to love kindness, to be kind does not mean that we give others what they want whenever they want it. The Spanish mystic and Saint, Teresa of Avila said two things about love that are worth reflecting on. “It is love alone that gives worth to all things.” and, “More tears are shed over answered prayers than unanswered ones.” The lesson is simply, be careful of what you pray for.

God is not an indiscriminate father who spoils his children. He gives his children what they need, not necessarily what they want. It was the Jewish scholar Master Maimonides who said “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” Thus sometimes the greatest kindness, is a kindness of empowerment. In the words of Benjamin Disraeli, “The greatest good you can do for another is not just share your riches, but reveal to them their own.”

We believe that when the Church is empowering its people, and its people are empowering their clergy and ministry personnel, true kindness is being expressed in the thoughts, words and actions of Christ’s faithful people.

The Integrated Christian Person - Part 4 - To do Justice

How do we do justice in our thoughts, words and actions?

First, let’s define Justice.

One usable definition of Justice comes from the Catechism of the Catholic Church. On Justice it says, (1807) “Justice is the moral virtue that consists in the constant and firm will to give their due to God and neighbor. ... Justice toward men disposes one to respect the rights of each and to establish in human relationships the harmony that promotes equity with regard to persons and to the common good.”

To do justice is to acknowledge both the importance of individual and at the same time to recognize the great importance of the common good. Balancing out individual needs, wants and rights with those of the common good is no easy task.

The Catholic Catechism then reminds us of the Biblical dictate of being impartial in our decision making process. (1807 cont.) The just man, often mentioned in the Sacred Scriptures, is distinguished by habitual right thinking and the uprightness of his conduct toward his neighbor. "You shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great, but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbor.” (Lev 19:15).

Being impartial, is no easy task either.

The Integrated Christian Person - Part 3 - What is required?

If we live in a state of complete harmony in our thought, words and action, what does God require of us, to truly be Integrated Christian Persons?

As Christians, whether we be Orthodox, Protestant or Catholic our first form or reference is the Bible. What if we are strictly concerned about our own welfare and not the welfare of others? Now the vile person, or the purely selfish person may be living in a harmonious way in their thoughts, words and actions. The problem is, this isn't what Christ calls us to be, is it? If we are to be in harmony in our thoughts, words and actions, we need a superior frame of reference to build our lives from.

The Integrated Christian Person - Part 1 - Introduction

What does it mean to be an Integrated Christian Person?

The Indian leader and Hindu M.H. Now, I can't speak for other Christians, but from my own vantage point, as a Secular Franciscan, as a Pastoral Counselor, as a persons who ministers to stressed out people of faith, I do have a viewpoint.

As I see it Osama Bin Laden was a man of great wealth, strong intelligence, and who obviously had great leadership abilities. It is a sad day when such talent is lost. Sadly, Osama Bin Laden used his skills for hate. He hated what he saw was injustice and he unleashed more hate in response.

Being the instigator of horrific crimes against humanity, he needed to be judged by a jury of his peers. Thus, I am disheartened by the way he was killed. By the order of an individual across the globe he was tried, sentanced and executed. Though I am strongly against the death penalty, justice was served far more in the case of the trial and eventual execution of Saddam Hussein than it was in the case of Osama Bin Laden.

I understand the sense of relief many people, especially many of my American friends feel at Bin Laden getting his "just deserts". Yet is justice truly served in this case? I'm afraid violence begets violence.

Let us pray for peace, and a softening of hearts.

Your Brother In Christ

Ron

Who Do We Minister Too?

Colleagues in Christ,

When Reverend John Griffith and I Co-founded Breathing Life into Ministry in December of 2009, we envisioned just working with clergy. Advent is meant to be a time of holy waiting, a time to envision the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, not only as he came to the world those many years ago, but to await a renewal of his presence in our own lives, and to await his second coming.

Often preparing for Christmas Services, whether it be a reenactment of the nativity scene, a Christmas Concert, Christmas Eve Services, or even Midnight Mass, can be a very stressful time for Clergy and Ministry Personnel. Undoubtedly we want our services to be meaningful if not rememberable. The Creche has to be just set up so. The trees have to be decorated properly. The Jesse Tree has to be in its place. The Advent Wreath has to have the right colored candles. The choir has to uplift the congregation yet not be too showy. Of course, we need enough songs that will encourage the congregation to sing along too. And the message from the ambo, lectern, or pulpit must convey what Christmas is all about.

If preparing for Christmas Services was not stressful enough, Clergy like every other adult Christian, must also prepare for Christmas in their own homes, with their own family or community.

In the busyness of it all, the true business of Advent and Christmas can become lost in our hearts.

Through out this Advent and right through the Christmas season let us remember what truly is the business of Christmas. For me, the business of Christmas is very simple and best summed up in the words of the great song writer John W. Work Jr.,

"Go, tell it on the mountain,

Over the hills and everywhere

Go, tell it on the mountain,

That Jesus Christ is born."

Pax et Bonum

Ron

Expectations 101

A lot of people are surprised when I tell them about the incredible stress that most clergy go through. Let's take a moment and list a few of the expectations that they are under:

1. The expectations of their congregations.

2. The expectations of their superiors.

3. The expectations of their denominations.

4. The expectations of their peers within their denominations.

5. The expectations of their peers within other denominations.

6.The expectations of their parish councils.

7. The expectations of their building committees.

8. The expectations of their finance councils.

9. If married, the expectations of their children.

10. If married, the expectations of their spouse.

11. The expectations of their community.

12. The expectations of their parents (living and deceased).

13. The expectations of the media, (which can at time be quite anti Christian).

14. The expectations of the greater society.

15. The expectations of those most in need of help.

16. The expectations of those most critical of Christianity.

17. The expectations of persons who use the church simply to get things done, i.e. weddings, baptisms, funerals.

18. The expectations of those who complain the loudest and support through their tithes the least.

19. The expectations of impatient people who demand instant communication, and instant results.

20. The expectations of rabid legalists, and rabid liberals (not to be confused with the run of the mill conservative and liberal Christians).

etc.

21. The expectations of themselves.

22. The expectations of their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Now this is but a short list, but if a Clergy person is not handling these expectations and other expectations well, these expectations will man handle them.

Pax et Bonum

Ron Semenoff SFO

Spiritual Attack

Clergy as a group are very stressed out. Why? We are discovering that there are many reasons for this. One underlying reason is Spiritual Attack.

In Mark's Gospel Chapter 5 we read how Jesus healed a demoniac, and after doing so the people of the area requested quite firmly that Jesus leave there vicinity. Obviously the people were more content to have a demon in their midst, than they were to have a man restored to sanity.

Most people hate change, so does our enemy the Devil. When a person, congregation, denomination, is challenged by their Clergy to make changes for the better, the Clergy often become targets for spiritual attack.

You may think that I am some kind of religious nut for saying this. To this charge I say, "Guilty as Charged!!" After all I do hold a Masters degree in Psychology. But, I learned from one wise professor I once had who told me to never discount a diagnosis of the influence of evil when making a diagnosis.

We are called to follow our loving God, our loving Savior Jesus Christ. If our Lord faced spiritual attack, why should we assume we will be free from it.

Pax et Bonum

Ron

Welcome

Hello,
As Co-founder of Breathing Life into Ministry I want to welcome you to our blog.

Here we will address issues that are effecting Clergy today.

I hope you will join us in our ongoing discussion as to how we can assist the Christian Community to be more impactful at presenting the Gospel to our tattered and battered word.

May Our Lor and Saviour Jesus Christ richly bless you and your faith community.

Pax et Bonum

Ron Semenoff SFO

Co-Founder with Rev John Griffith of Breathing Life into Ministry: Professional Development and Stress Management for Clergy (c)
